Children’s Objectives

1.   Write intercessory prayers for the world – prayers for the whole people of God

2.   Pray the Lord’s Prayer from memory

3.   Recite the Apostle’s Creed from memory

4.   Explore the concepts of grace and faith

5.   Explore the relevance of the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion

6.   Understand the meanings of some of the best known symbols of the Church

7.   Use Bible resource tools

8.   Name other Christian denominations and demonstrate understanding of our brother/sister-hood in Christ

9.   Recite the books of the New Testament in order

10. Initiate service projects for Church or community.

Parents’ Guidelines

1.   Ensure that child knows from memory:  Lord’s Prayer, Apostle’s Creed, Books of the New Testament

·     Recite Lord’s Prayer and Apostle’s Creed as part of family devotions

2.   Find ways to celebrate the unique qualities, abilities and personality that is emerging in the child and point to how these may be used to serve the Lord Christ

·     Do a family “ministry gift inventory” (example: a time and talent sheet) and make a plan to use your gifts

3.   Assist the child to explore his/her feelings, thoughts, and questions about self, others, and God.

·     Make a list of family questions and ask your pastor for guidance

4.   Foster a life of prayer as a way to understand the importance of prayer for the child’s growing sense of connectedness to others that includes thanksgiving and intercession

5.   Use family outings as a time to wonder how god is active in our lives, as well as in the world around us

·     Point out the wonder of God’s creation

·     Point out God’s many blessings

6.   Explore basic Christian symbols with child, especially those within the sanctuary

·     Point out symbols on paraments, stained glass, etc.

·     Ask pastor for a “family tour” of the sanctuary

7.   Expect child to initiate and volunteer for involvement in service projects in the community and at the church
