Children’s Objectives

1.   Understand that some of the Psalms are expressions of praise to God

2.   Express thoughts about the Bible not only in words but also by drawing and painting

3.   Begin to read brief, selected passages of the passages of the Bible, with help.

4.   Recognize the Bible as God’s Word.

5.   Follow Scripture readings during Worship

6.   Recite the Ten Commandments

7.   Recite selected memory verses:  John 3:16, Matthew 7:7, Luke 10:27

8.   Pray basic prayers of confession, praise, thanksgiving, and intercession

9.   Demonstrate knowledge of seasons of the Church year

10. Demonstrate peaceful problem-solving techniques to resolve conflicts

Parents’ Guidelines

1.   Instruct child how to read a Psalm as part of daily family devotion

·     Using the LBW/ELW, instruct child concerning markings for responsive readings by whole or half verse

2.   Express thoughts about Scripture stories through drawings and painting at home

·     Initiate seasonal art projects

·     For example: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Holy Week, Lent, Pentecost

3.   Relate daily life to Ten Commandments

·     Discuss situations in child’s daily life and ask how these events relate to the commandments.

·     For example: A classmate takes another’s candy bar, and how this relates to the commandment “thou shalt not steal.”

4.   Assist child in using bulletin to mark hymns and liturgy for Worship

·     Arrive at Worship early and set up your hymnal

·     Make a hymnal marker with ribbons to take to Worship

5.   Encourage child to point out changes in liturgy and Worship furnishings (e.g., paraments) throughout the Church year

6.   Frequently discuss conflict resolution as a regular part of family life

·     Emphasize God’s love, grace, and forgiveness when conflict occurs
