Welcome to Egypt, Mom and Dad!
Wednesday & Thursday - Sinai
Wednesday my parents and I loaded into a station wagon taxi with Hans, one of the other volunteers, and his friend, Taimi.  The drive to St. Catherine's took about 6 hours, during which time we were stopped at no fewer than 7 police checkpoints (8 if you count the one where a guy stepped out of a hut to move a single cone out of the middle of the road without asking any questions or even looking in the car).  At least all the police in Egypt are employed!  After dinner, we went to bed around 9 PM, woke up at 2 AM, and started hiking.  One of us chose to ride a camel part of the way and decided not to go quite all the way to the top, but we all got to see the sunrise from one vantage point or another.  After a small delay Thursday morning (because our driver didn't wake up and was still sleeping in his taxi when we found a way to get in touch with him), we headed back to Cairo, stopping at the Red Sea for lunch and a little stroll along the beach.  We're tired now, but it was a fun couple of days.
A comfortable ride in the station wagon taxi - note Hans cannot sit up straight without hitting the ceiling Ready to hike at 2 AM Driving through the desert
This picture is blurred to protect the identity of the camel rider. The sun started to rise just before we reached the top.
Just as the sun peeked over the mountains

Beginning the long hike down...
That's a long way up! All the way up there?! At least there is a nice view for the hike.
Almost there...can you believe we were that far up?
