Welcome to Egypt, Mom and Dad!
Saturday - Islamic Cairo and the Khan el Khalili
Saturday we visited the old Islamic part of Cairo.  I have been on a tour of this area of Cairo (twice) with a professor from the seminary who is very knowledgeable about the history of Islam in Cairo.  The tour was very interesting, but I am, unfortunately, a poor student and I could remember only enough to confuse my parents and give them vague information about the building we saw.  Instead, we spent most of our time at the Khan el Khalili, a bazaar where there are lots of people and it is possible to buy nearly anything (really).

Like any other tourist shopping area, the khan has its share of scarves... ...tacky novelty t-shirts... ...and galibayas.  OK, that's a little different, but be sure to ask my mom to model her galibaya for you!
Here, you also find pipes for smoking sheesha (I had to hold my parents back)... ...giant metal pots and trays... ...used tires of all sizes, neatly stacked and hung in the storefront...
...wrought iron in all colors and sizes... ...and my personal favorite, minaret toppers for all those mosques you might be working on at home! Oh, and don't forget coconuts - you never know when you might be shopping on the streets of Cairo and get a sudden craving for coconut milk.
Sunday was Easter and we celebrated by eating and then going to church and then eating some more.  After 40 days of vegan fasting, I was thrilled to wake up to cinnamon rolls, eggs, yogurt, and pork bacon (quite a rare find in a country that doesn't eat pigs).  It was quite a feast with all the residents of Dawson Hall (and some friends).
Breakfast was a fun way to celebrate Easter morning and to end the Lenten fast.
What a feast! Pastor Mark The church decorated for Easter
St. Andrews from the outside After church, the congregation had a potluck lunch to celebrate the day!
Lunch was also a good time to catch up with friends and celebrate Martha Roy's 92nd birthday!
