Welcome to Egypt, Mom and Dad!
Friday - Pyramids
The day started with a trip to Memphis (not TN), the first capital of Egypt.  We then traveled to Saqqara to walk inside one of the small pyramids and to view the first pyramid.  After a brief trip to a carpet school, which is a rug factory where all the rugs are made by children under the age of 15, we went to Giza to see the big pyramids and the sphinx.  The day ended with a traditional Egyptian meal at a nice restaurant near Giza.

Don't you hate it when you spend 3 years carving a granite sarcophagus with 19 of your closest friends just to have to throw it away because of one little crack?  If only they had duct tape back then... My mom didn't get arrested by the tourist police, but I think they might be questioning her about that hat my dad is wearing. It's not the big one, but this sphinx was easier to photograph because there weren't as many people crowded around.
Inside the small pyramid I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to climb in there, but the guard told them to do it (he really did; of course he was expecting a "tip").
The step pyramid and the newest statues at Saqqara
At the carpet factory we learned about carpet types - silk, wool, etc - and we learned a little about child labor.
And, finally, we made it to Giza for the big pyramids
Mom and Dad even took a little ride (really more of a sit) on a camel. Are you sure it's supposed to work this way? Hi-ho silver (or Ghergis, Mohammed, or whatever this camel's name is)!
Um, I'm not sure I like this... Just have to keep snapping pictures in case one of them falls off. I think he's relieved to be back on the ground in one piece!
The big Sphinx You really can't come to Egypt and not take this picture! Is my head really that big?
Really, really big blocks We're all here! A few other people were there with us!
After a long day, we had a nice Egyptian lunch of grilled chicken at Andrea's.
How my father spent his day at the pyramids...
(Those of you who have vacationed with my family before will appreciate this!)
...taking a photo of the rest of the group waiting for him to finish taking pictures... ...using a variety of fences, barricades, and other structures as a tripod... ...and, believe it or not, that tiny speck is him lying on the ground to get the best angle for a photo of the big pyramid!
